On March 15 we had a Chess Tournament. The two teams were Knights of the Round Table and Queens of the Octagon Table. The team that won was the Queens coming in at 11.5 and the Knights came in at 9.5. There was some really close games. Thank you all who participated and came out to see the two teams compete. In third place for the individuals was Josh Avery with 3 wins and Tyler (adult on the Queens team) and Levi Phillips 11 year old 5th grader (student on the Knights team) tied for 1st place. It was an intense game. They both had 3.5 wins. We had 21 participants, 2 judges, and 1 arbiter. Congrats to all!

Mr. Herr led 20 students in grades 3-6 and Ms. Aldridge in a X-C-Skiing Program for several weeks this winter as part of Canaan's After School Program. Students learned the correct form to x-c ski and eventually learned how to maneuver slopes and off trail. Each day ended with hot chocolate and yummy snacks. The program culminated with a field trip March 4th where the group explored groomed trails at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center. Fun was had by all.

Legislative Survey on Public Education Transformation The Vermont Legislature is conducting a survey during Town Meeting week on what Vermonters would like to see for the future of public education (read below for more information): Governor Scott has proposed sweeping changes to our education system and the legislature is reviewing his proposal this legislative session. We know how important our education system is to our state and we also know that Vermonters have concerns about the increased cost to fund our system. It's a big effort to take on and we need your help! As we move forward with transforming our public education system, we want to hear directly from you—students, parents, educators, and community members—about what’s working, what’s not, and what you’d like to see in the future. Your input will help shape the policies and decisions we make in the State House to ensure our public education system remains strong, provides the best possible opportunities for all students, and is a system that Vermonters can afford. You can read Governor Scott's education plan at www.governor.vermont.gov/strongerschools. This survey is made up of 20 optional questions and can be accessed here: https://bit.ly/VoiceVermontEducation. Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts.

Canaan Schools will be adjusting the student drop off and pick-up procedures in response to concerns about student safety starting March 3, 2025. Our new procedures will be: 1. Student drop off and pick up times will be at 7:35 am and 2:50 pm. 2. Bus students will be dropped off at 7:30 am and picked up at 2:45 pm. All buses and cars dropping off students will enter the lower parking lot. 3. Cars will not be allowed in front of the buses. If you arrive early you must wait in the lower parking lot. Do not park at the top of the road where pick up and drop off will be until all the buses have left. 4. Between the hours of 7:20 am to 8:00 am and 2:30 pm to 3:00 pm, no student drop off or pick up will be allowed in the upper parking lot. 5. Effective March 3, 2025, parents/guardians will not be allowed in the building without a visitor pass; this has been a major safety concern for our staff and students. There will be no exception to this rule without permission of an administrator or a visitor pass. All of these changes have been discussed with administration, the leadership committees, and at the request of community members. Please reach out to Principal Ron Patterson with any questions or concerns. ropatterson@canaanschools.org 802-266-8910 Ext 2104
